So the gauntlet was laid down at a recent get together here in my neighborhood: “Have you tried Sugar Shack donuts?”
Always up for a challenge, your resident foodie, Gigi Hyland, scouted it out. Sugar Shack Donuts had its grand opening in Alexandria on Saturday, January 24th. Sugar Shack started in Richmond to rave reviews. This is the chain’s first location in Northern VA.
Donuts are a huge weakness of mine. I love fresh, cake-y donuts with simple toppings like sugar, cinnamon or (of course) chocolate. But, admittedly, I was a little leery of Sugar Shack given all the Yelp reviews that touted donut flavors like “Maple Bacon” and “Heath Bar Crunch.” Taking fear in hand, I ventured forth.
Located at 804 Henry Street (Route 1 South) between Montgomery and Madison Streets on the right hand side of the road, Sugar Shack is an unassuming store front with a big donut on the door and the word “Donuts” above and below. Walk in and you are in sugar heaven. There are racks and racks of freshly made, huge donuts with a plethora of toppings and flavors to choose from. With the help of the sales assistant I chose four best sellers: The Heath Bar Crunch, the Maple Bacon, the Cinnamon, and the Samoa (top to bottom in the picture below).
Two thumbs up on everything but the Maple Bacon. This was just too strange a combo for me on top of a donut. The simpler donuts appealed to me more with robust cinnamon, decadent coconut and luscious chocolate. The donuts are all yeast base so they are airy and light (if that can even be correctly said for a donut). And, please note, these donuts are BIG. Sharing is recommended.
If you go, get ready to wait in line. There were about 10 people ahead of me at 8:30 am on a Friday morning and I imagine the place is jammed on the weekends. Would I go again? Probably not. Glad I tried it, but I’ll stick to my Wegman’s cake donuts when I decide to indulge.
